Debra DeWolffTHE ARTIST

Strong vibrant colors, bold graphic patterns, and temptingly touchable textures characterize Debra DeWolff’s work. The simplicity of the shapes, often abstracted from natural forms, belies the intricacy of her jewelry designs. Her work is often imbued with minute and painstakingly applied detail, dots being a favorite recurring pattern. With their bright colors and whimsical designs, her eye-catching pieces are theatrical and compel the viewer’s attention.

Debra started her art career as a studio quilter in the 1990s. After winning awards on the national level for her large, graphic wall quilts, she switched gears entirely and began working with polymer clay. Debra attributes the move in this way, “A quilt could take me up to six months to complete, but with polymer there’s a much more immediate satisfaction and result. And mixing the colors of the clay is a lot like painting, which I’ve also always loved.”

Though she set quilting aside to work in polymer clay, Debra never lost her love for the tactile lure of fiber and frequently combines it with other media in her work. In recent years she also added metalsmithing skills to her repertoire, often framing the saturated hues of her polymer in sterling silver.

Debra now works full-time at her jewelry business in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She sells her work at select art shows and galleries and also teaches around the country.
